GHR Graduate Traineeship Placement Application

St. Catherine University's Henrietta Schmoll School of Health (HSSH) received an $18 million dollar Academic Excellence Grant from the GHR Foundation in 2016 to advance growth and innovation in healthcare education with emphasis on global health, primary care, and senior living. 

Funding is available for faculty/staff to host graduate trainees for projects that align with the specific aims and conceptual framework of the GHR Academic Excellence Grant. All departments and employees are eligible to submit proposals. Student trainees must be enrolled graduate students during the term of the project/traineeship. *Students in accelerated programs (e.g. 3+3, 3+2, etc.) will not be eligible until they are officially classified as graduate students.

Deadlines for traineeships include the following:

Fall Semester - April 15th 
J-Term Semester - August 15th
Spring Semester - October 15th 
Summer Semester - January 15th 

Note: When submitting this application, you are allowed to apply for a full academic year or just a single semester. 

Graduate students will be compensated with a tuition stipend of $4,000 for each academic semester (16 weeks) working on the project for around 15 hours per week for the duration of the term. Tuition stipends will be prorated on the number of hours and start date of the project. The project and traineeship will adhere to the University Graduate Assistantship & Traineeship Policy. 
 
*Ideally, applicants will have a student identified for this project. However, student(s) do not need to be named at the time of application, but can be later named if funding is awarded. 
 
*Trainees may not be employees of St. Catherine University. 
 
*Priority may be given to those who have not received funding previously. 
 
The GHR Grants Leadership Team will notify applicants of their award status and support post award management with awardees.

Funding Priorities

The Academic Excellence Grant (AEG) aims to improve societal health and well-being by preparing providers capable of practicing in emerging health-related environments focused on interprofessional collaborative practice, cultural fluency, and ecological approaches to health with particular emphasis on global health, senior living, and primary care.

These core practice elements are:

  • Interprofessional Collaborative Practice (ICP)—when multiple health workers from different backgrounds work together with patients, families, carers, and communities to deliver the highest quality of care (WHO, 2010)
  • Cultural Fluency—ability to navigate the many dimensions of culture needed to build shared meaning and understanding with people from other cultures. It is comprised of several skills such as working with ambiguity, flexibility, respect, empathy and adaptability (Inoue, 2007)
  • Ecological Approach—grounded in the understanding that the conditions that result in individual health or illness arise out of the interaction between an individual’s traits and their physical and sociocultural environment and are influenced on multiple levels (e.g. intrapersonal, interpersonal, organizational, community and policy (Sallis & Owen, 2015)
