American Heart Association Instructor Courses

Am I eligible to become an AHA Instructor?
Candidates must be at least 18 years old and must have a current AHA certification in the discipline(s) for which they are teaching and be proficient in all skills. If becoming an ACLS/PALS Instructor, the skills fall under the candidate's scope of practice (ie. candidate is a current paramedic, nurse, physcian, et. al).

What are the pre-requisites to become an AHA Instructor?
1. Must align with AEC as the Training Center (TC) on the AHA Instructor Network. If candidates are currently an instructor for a different discipline, they'd request alignment with AEC for the new discipline. If candidates are not currently an instructor, they'd create an Instructor Network account and align with AEC.
2. Complete the Instructor Candidate Application (emailed once registration is received).
3. Provide a copy of current AHA provider card for the discipline of the instructor course.
4. Complete the Instructor Essentials Online Course and provide a copy of the completion certificate (key code for online course will be emailed to candidate).

What is the process to become an AHA Instructor?
After successfully completing the Instructor Essentials Online Course and the attending the in-person instructor course, candidates are required to be monitored by Training Faculty (TF). If affiliated with a current Training Site (TS), their TF can complete the monitoring. AEC's Training Center Coordinator (TCC) can confirm the TF associated with the TS. If not affiliated with a current TS, candidates are responsible for setting up monitoring through the TCC. Monitoring must be completed within six months of the in-person course. After the monitoring has been completed and the required forms have been completed and submitted, the TCC will approve the candidate for alignment with the TC and issue the instructor eCard.

Can I transfer to another Training Center after I've been monitored?
Yes, once the candidate has received their instructor eCard, they can transfer to another TC.

Is it required for me to renew my instructor certification after I've completed the instructor course?
Yes, AHA requires instructors to renew every two years. The requirements to renew are teaching four classes minimum for the discipline instructors are renewing and be monitored teaching at least one class by TF. Upon completion and submission of the required forms, the TCC will review for renewal.

Cancellation Policy: AEC charges a $25.00 fee for any cancellation or transfer made in advance of the course. "No shows" will result in forfeiture of the entire registration amount.

Refund Policy: Partial refunds will be issued by check to the address provided on the registration form. The amount of the refund will be dependent upon the ordering of materials. If materials are ordered from AHA, there will be no refund for that portion of the cost of the course ($160.00 for BLS; $251.00 for ACLS/PALS). If Instructor Essentials Key Codes are issued and activated, there will be no refund for that amount ($40.00). If they are issued and not activated (AEC can successfully revoke the key code), a refund will be issued for that amount.
